Speaking and Listening for Seniors: Syllabus

Learning goals

To improve your English listening and speaking skills in the context of authentic, everyday English
To improve your English listening and speaking confidence and fluency
To gain a greater understanding of social and cultural contexts of English use

Materials

All materials will be available on the class home page. You do not need to buy anything.

Attendance and participation

Attendance and participation are mandatory. Please let the instructor know if you're going to have to miss a class. More than three unexcused absences will result in a lower grade, and more than six unexcused absences may result in your not passing the class.

Projects and activities

This is a project based class. We will be watching three movies over the course of the semester. For each movie, you will be assigned a significant amount of homework, including readings and listening comprehension activities. We will have in-class discussions and other activities based on your homework.

Additionally, you will be required to participate in five short oral interviews in which you classmates and instructor will ask you questions loosely related to the movie we are watching at the time.

Grading

Attendance and participation: 30%
Homework, including all listening homework and other assigned homework: 40%
Interviews: 30%
