This assignment actually requires that you write a persuasive essay, sometimes called an argumentative essay, on a topic of local and current importance. We will brainstorm topics in class.
You should already be familiar with persuasive writing, but a fairly good summary can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persuasive_writing.
We will spend a significant amount of time in class discussing effective persuasion, sound logic (and false logic), and mechanical devices particularly useful in persuasive writing.
